Karamu House Announces 2024-25 Mainstage Theatre Season Beginning With An Ossie Davis Classic

CLEVELAND, Ohio– July 30, 2024: Karamu’s 2024-25 mainstage theatre season opens with Ossie Davis’s high-energy classic and a most recent Broadway feature, Purlie Victorious, directed by Treva Offutt who also directed last season’s opener, Clyde’s. Holiday and family favorite, Langston Hughes’ Black Nativity, returns to Playhouse Square this December, this time in a new home – the Hanna Theatre, co-directed by President + CEO, Tony F. Sias, and Errin Weaver (also the choreographer), under the musical direction of Dr. David M. Thomas. In the third position is Weathering by Harrison Davis Rivers, directed by Associate Artistic Director, Nina Domingue. This drama centers issues of birth trauma amongst Black women, originally commissioned by Minnesota’s Penumbra Theater. The season closes with the rescheduled production of Choir Boy by Terrell Alvin McCraney, directed by Nathan Henry.

President + CEO, Tony F. Sias says, “Karamu is fully moved back into the renovated Theatre Wing and we are excited to take full advantage of the spaces. The Bank of America Arena Theatre will feature our DEIAB Series where we host companies and institutions interested in Corporate Training utilizing the arts. We are also very excited to continue our partnership as an affiliate company of Playhouse Square during the holiday season with Black Nativity in the Hanna Theatre.”

The season launches on September 27, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. with the opening night of Purlie Victorious.

Special Presentation:

Karamu House has expanded its offerings in the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Access and Belonging arena. The series of scenes and monologues utilizes the arts to teach corporations about the ways unconscious bias can affect the day-to-day operations of a company. The series has been performed at the Greater Cleveland Partnership Conference, for Leadership Cleveland, the employees of the City of Shaker

Arts Education

Karamu kicks off its 2024-25 class offerings on September 16, 2024. Karamu Arts Academy stands on four pillars of arts education: Sacred Space, Technique, History/Culture, and Personal Expression. Emerging artists explore contemporary, classical, and devised works, including those from Black playwrights to strengthen performance skills and learn how the arts can be a gateway for advocacy. There are classes available for Youth beginning at age 5 and adults.

 

Community Programs

Karamu will continue to produce and present culturally and socially relevant community programs for all people. Programming to include:

  • In the Tradition Series (Kwanzaa, MLK Day, Black History Month)
  • Post-show talkbacks
  • Live music concerts
  • Comedy shows
  • Financial education
  • Room in the House residency/fellowship
