Position: Director of Development

Reports To:President + CEO

FLSA Status: Full-time, Exempt


DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT: The Director of Development supports the highest strategic priorities of the theatre and serves as a member of the leadership team. He or she will focus on development and fundraising through grants to major local foundations and through the identification, cultivation and stewardship of prospects and individual donors for planned and major gifts. The Director of Development plays a leading role in Karamu’s strategic planning initiatives which currently include the establishment of strong development functions.

Primary responsibilities for the role include:

• Plan, implement and measure a development and fundraising program to provide for Karamu’s short and long-term needs – including campaign management.

· Identify, research, cultivate, and steward individual donor prospects for planned and major gifts.

· Develop and administer a reporting system for identifying prospects, tracking prospect cultivation, progress towards gift closure, and stewardship.

· Maintain overall oversight of the agency’s donor database, including specific duties such as to review and to stratify historical donor data to determine best opportunities for success for future giving.

· Work with CEO and board to strategize number and timing of annual giving and cultivation events/activities.

· Develop and implement a corporate sponsorship campaign.

· Collaborate regularly with the artistic, education, and programming teams to ensure a clear and accurate interpretation of the organization’s vision and direction.

· Work as part of the leadership team on short and long-term strategic issues.

· Work closely with the President and CEO, members of the Board, and leadership staff throughout the agency to achieve goals.

· Lead team of staff, vendors, consultants, and volunteers to achieve annual and long-range goals.

· Develop community ties and serve on committees to further develop the profile of arts within the city and state.

· Collaborate with the Director of Marketing to integrate organizational strategy and customer relationship management and fundraising efforts.

· Other duties as assigned.

Success in this position requires:

• Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to develop rapport, as well as build and maintain relationships with donors, trustees, patron, volunteers, and staff.

· Experienced manager and team builder.

· Excellent oral and written skills, with ability to prepare and deliver concise, understandable, and effective letters, proposal, reports, and presentations.

· Computer and internet proficiency, including experience working with donor databases.

· Strategic and analytical skills.

· Ability to work at the conceptual level as well as the implementation phase.

· A genuine interest in and knowledge of the theatre / performing arts.

· Proven organizational skills and ability to multi-task.

· Able to articulate in writing and in speaking a compelling case for the organization’s mission.

· Able to effectively build solid relationships.

 

COMPENSATION

Salary: $80K -$100K; Benefits include medical, paid time off, paid federal holidays, paid sick time and complimentary production tickets.
