Karamu House provides arts education to hundreds of children and adults each year during the fall, spring and summer semesters. The Karamu Arts Academy includes classes and lessons for children and adults, alike, in drama and theatre, vocal performance and music, dance, and more.
PLEASE NOTE: all arts education classes are virtual at this time.
Examples of programs and classes within the Karamu Arts Academy, include:
Karamu Littles (for Pre-K to First Grade)
Little artists learn the fundamentals of storytelling, dramatic arts, tap dance, and ballet.
Karamu Level I (for elementary and middle school students, Second Grade to Eighth Grade)
Artists receive training in theatre and dance, while also building social and emotional skills.
Karamu Level II* (a multi-generational class for children (9+) and adults)
Artists receive intensive training in theatre, vocal music, and dance with a culminating performance. This is an intergenerational repertory course and requires an 85% attendance commitment and audition.
Parent Classes (ages 18+)
Parents with children enrolled in Saturday morning classes can participate in a variety of classes themselves, free-of-charge. Class topics and schedules are provided during the first week of the youth class.
Adult Workshops (ages 18+)
Karamu Arts Academy hosts a variety of monthly workshops for adult artists.
Private Lessons (ages 18+)
Karamu Arts Academy offers private lessons in theatre and dance, available upon request.
Group Workshops and Field Trips (all ages)
Karamu Arts Academy hosts private groups and organizations interested in tours and/or theatre and dance workshops.
Family Nights at the Theatre (all ages*)
During the main stage season, Karamu Arts Academy hosts families, with children currently or previously enrolled in classes, for select performances with dinner and a private dress rehearsal.
Summer Intensive (for Seventh to Twelfth Grades)
For youth entering grades 7-12, the Karamu Arts Academy offers a 7-week intensive program that offers specialized training in a variety of arts disciplines, including drama, vocal music, dance and the visual arts.
